Cole, Thomas

Thomas Cole painted landscapes that carry a whole story inside them, and that sense of a scene going somewhere is what makes his work such a pleasure in counted cross stitch.

He was an Anglo-American painter, born in 1801 and died in 1848, and he is the man who started the Hudson River School. European painting shaped him, but what he did with it was distinctly American: wide country, weather, and the feeling that the land itself is the subject. He also worked in series, building history painting into sequences that follow a life or an empire from beginning to end. Oil on canvas was his medium throughout a busy career.

Cole taught Frederic Edwin Church. Martin Johnson Heade, Robert S Duncanson and George Inness all belonged to the same Hudson River School.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Thomas Cole art prints are easy to find.
