Comerre, Leon Francois

Leon Francois Comerre built a career on portraits of beautiful women, and that steady attention to a single face is what carries his work so comfortably into counted cross stitch.

He was French, born in 1850 and died in 1916, and he trained under Alphonse Colas. Comerre belonged to the academic tradition, the polished mainstream of French painting in his day, and he is remembered for two things above all: his portraits and his Orientalist subjects. Titles like Danae and The Triumph of the Swan show how readily he turned to mythological stories, while works such as Haifa point to the Eastern themes that occupied so much of his later reputation.

William Adolphe Bouguereau, Jules Lefebvre, Charles Amable Lenoir, and Georges Jules Victor Clairin worked in the same portrait tradition.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Leon Francois Comerre art prints are easy to find.
