Jan ten Compe painted the streets and waterways of his own country with the sort of steady attention that suits counted cross stitch, where a row of gabled houses becomes a row of stitches.
He was a landscape painter from the Dutch Republic, born in 1713 and died in 1761. The places he chose are still recognizable today: a view across The Hague, the town hall at Delft seen from the Grote Markt, the Beguinage with its English Church, a country estate standing on the Holendrecht between Ouderkerk aan de Amstel and Abcoude. Painting was not his only trade. He worked in Amsterdam as an art dealer too, and Tibout Regters sat him down for a portrait in 1751, which tells you something about the company he kept in the city.
