John Constable painted the fields and lanes he grew up in rather than the grand scenery other painters traveled to find, and that plainness is part of why his landscapes suit counted cross stitch so well.
He was an English painter, born in 1776 and died in 1837, and a Suffolk man to the bone. The borderland of Suffolk and north Essex around his home is called Constable Country now, which says something about how completely he claimed it. He also worked in marine subjects, genre scenes and portraits, but it is the landscape painting that changed things. "I should paint my own places best," he wrote to his friend John Fisher in 1821. "Painting is but another word for feeling."
Joseph Mallord William Turner, Thomas Lawrence, Karl Briullov, and Eugene Delacroix were fellow Romantics working the same ground.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, John Constable art prints are easy to find.
