Constant, Jean-Joseph Benjamin

Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant built a career on Oriental subjects that pulled French viewers a long way from home, and that sense of a scene worth staring at is what carries his paintings into counted cross stitch.

He was French, born in 1845 and died in 1902, and he signed his work Benjamin-Constant though he came into the world as plain Jean-Joseph Constant. Painting and etching both occupied him. His reputation rests on two things: the Orientalist pictures, including grand set pieces such as Mehmed II's Entry Into Constantinople, and the portraits he made of the people around him. He trained under Jules Garipuy and Jean Francis Auburtin.

Benjamin-Constant taught William Samuel Horton and left his mark on Charles Courtney Curran. William Adolphe Bouguereau and Alexandre Cabanel worked in the same French academic tradition.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Jean-Joseph Benjamin Constant art prints are easy to find.
