Jean Baptiste Camille Corot stood with one foot in the old studio tradition and the other out in the open air, and that double nature is what makes his landscapes such rewarding subjects for counted cross stitch.
He was French, born in 1796 and died in 1875, and he painted more than most artists manage in two lifetimes. Landscapes were his great subject, though he also worked in portraiture, allegory, religious scenes, and everyday life, and he etched as well as painted. What he is remembered for is the bridge he built: his work still answers to the Neo-Classical schooling he received from Achille Etna Michallon and Jean-Victor Bertin, yet it points straight ahead to the plein-air painting of the Impressionists who came after him.
Paul Desire Trouillebert and Karl Bodmer were fellow painters of the Barbizon school, while Gustave Courbet and Henri Fantin-Latour worked alongside him in French Realism.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Jean Baptiste Camille Corot art prints are easy to find.
