Antonio Allegri da Correggio was an Italian painter, born in 1489 and died in 1534, and the leading figure of the Parma school during the High Renaissance. He painted religious subjects, allegory, landscape and the nude, and he is remembered above all as a master of chiaroscuro, that handling of light against deep shadow that gives a painted figure weight. His dramatic foreshortening and illusionistic perspective went well beyond what his contemporaries were attempting, and painters of the following two centuries built on what he started.
Correggio influenced Nicolo Abbate, and (Bernardino di Betto) Pinturicchio was a fellow Renaissance painter.
