Courbet, Gustave

Gustave Courbet insisted on painting only what he could actually see, and that plain honesty is what carries his work so well into counted cross stitch.

He was a French painter, born in 1819 and died in 1877, and he led the Realism movement that pushed back against both academic rules and the Romantic drama of the generation before him. Landscape painting, portraits, animals and scenes of ordinary working life all sat comfortably in his range, and he was never shy about making a social statement with a canvas. Rembrandt, Rubens and Caravaggio all left marks on him, as did the prints of Hokusai. His independence mattered enormously to the painters who came after, from the Impressionists to the Cubists.

Courbet's example influenced Gustave Dore and Claude Monet. Jean Baptiste Camille Corot and Henri Fantin-Latour worked alongside him in French Realism.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Gustave Courbet art prints are easy to find.
