Jasper Francis Cropsey built his reputation on American autumn, and that turning of the year is what makes his landscapes such rewarding subjects for counted cross stitch.
He was an American painter, born in 1823 and died in 1900, and he trained as an architect before landscape took over. That background never quite left him. Autumn - On the Hudson River, painted in 1860, is the work most people know him by, and it sits at the heart of the Hudson River School, the loose group of painters who treated American scenery as a subject worth taking seriously. He also painted Starrucca Viaduct in 1865, a railroad bridge set into the Pennsylvania hills, which suggests a man perfectly happy to let engineering share the frame with the wilderness.
Other nineteenth-century painters: Frederic Edwin Church, Thomas Edwin Mostyn, Emile Claus, and Grigoriy Myasoyedov.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Jasper Francis Cropsey art prints are easy to find.
