Delaroche, Paul

Paul Delaroche painted kings and martyrs as ordinary people caught in terrible moments, and that plainness is what carries his history painting so well into counted cross stitch.

He was French, born in 1797 and died in 1856, and he built his reputation on scenes drawn from English and French history. What set him apart was his refusal to flatter. Marie-Antoinette, Napoleon Bonaparte, a figure from Christian scripture, a face from his own century: all of them got the same honest treatment, without the heroics the age expected. The feeling in the work belongs to Romanticism, while the careful finish sits closer to Academicism. He came up as a leading pupil of Antoine-Jean Gros and also studied with Louis Etienne Watelet.

Delaroche taught Charles Francois Jalabert, Jean-Leon Gerome, Henri Pierre Picou, and Charles Landelle.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Paul Delaroche art prints are easy to find.
