dell'Acqua, Cesare Felix

Cesare Felix dell'Acqua built his reputation on history painting, and the costumed, close-observed figures at the center of that work are what carry so well into counted cross stitch.

He was an Italian painter, born in 1821 and died in 1905, and much of his life's work sits between two habits: the historical scene and the portrait. Training came from Ludovico Lipparini, Odorico Politi and Girolamo Michelangelo Grigoletti, which put him squarely in the Venetian teaching tradition of his day. That grounding shows in subjects like The Jewels of the Bride, where sixteenth-century Venetian women are painted with the sort of attention usually reserved for a sitter in the room. The history is the setting; the faces are the point.

Other nineteenth-century painters: Conrad Kiesel, Edward Mason Eggleston, William McGregor Paxton, and Leopold Schmutzler.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Cesare Felix dell'Acqua art prints are easy to find.
