An American painter and lithographer, he was born in 1793 and died in 1856, and his name sits among the Hudson River School artists who made landscape the serious subject of American art rather than a backdrop for something else. Works such as View on the Hudson in Autumn and the Fanciful Landscape of 1834 show where his attention went: open country, water, distance. He worked at a time when few painters here made a living from scenery alone, and he is remembered largely because he did.
