Gustave Doyen spent his career on portraits of young women and girls, the kind of quiet, close-in subject that carries beautifully into counted cross stitch.
He was French, born in 1836 and died in 1923, and his education began at St Edmund's College in Douai before he trained under William Bouguereau. Portraiture stayed his subject, and he showed his work at the Salon de Paris. Beyond that, he is not a name the art histories say much about. What survives is a handful of faces, often a girl with flowers in her hands, that still find their way onto walls more than a century later.
Doyen studied under William Adolphe Bouguereau, who worked in the same portrait tradition.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Gustave Doyen art prints are easy to find.
