Drouais, Francois Hubert

Francois Hubert Drouais spent his career looking closely at faces, and that steady attention to a sitter is what carries his portraits so well into counted cross stitch.

He was French, born in 1727 and died in 1775, and by the closing years of Louis XV's reign he was the portrait painter the court came to. Madame du Barry sat for him. So did Madame Sophie de France. Among the works that still circulate widely are a young woman posed as a vestal virgin, painted in 1767, and a lady thought to be Mademoiselle Dore from two years earlier. Portraiture was the whole of it for Drouais, and the rococo taste of his moment ran straight through the work, yet the people in these paintings never quite settle into being decoration. They look back.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Francois Hubert Drouais art prints are easy to find.
