Duncanson, Robert S

Robert S Duncanson built a landscape career in a country that gave a free black man very little room to build anything, and the quiet grandeur of those paintings carries over beautifully into counted cross stitch.

Duncanson was an American painter of European and African ancestry, born in 1821 and died in 1872. He worked mostly in Cincinnati, where he helped shape the Ohio River Valley landscape tradition, though his life also ran through Detroit, Montreal, and London. Thomas Cole's example pulled him toward the Hudson River school, and he is counted among its second generation. He painted portraits and still life too, but the landscapes made his name, and he became the first African American artist known internationally, with abolitionist supporters on both sides of the Atlantic helping carry his work abroad. Art historians still argue over how much racial meaning sits inside those scenes.

Martin Johnson Heade, Frederic Edwin Church, George Inness, and Asher Brown Durand were fellow Hudson River school landscape painters.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Robert S Duncanson art prints are easy to find.
