Franz Dvorak painted single figures with the kind of steady, unhurried attention that carries straight over into counted cross stitch.
He was a Czech painter, born in 1862 and died in 1927, and he arrived in the world as Frantisek Dvorak, born Bruner. The name followed him about in several forms, so his pictures turn up signed and catalogued as Dvorak, Dvořák and sometimes Bruner. What he is best remembered for now are a handful of figure paintings that keep being reprinted more than a century later, Purity and Passion and The Angel of the Birds above all. Beyond the paintings themselves he is not a name the art histories say much about, which makes the surviving work do all the talking.
Other nineteenth-century painters: Anne-Francois-Louis Janmot, George Dunlop R.A. Leslie, Henri Pierre Picou, and Francis Coates Jones.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Franz Dvorak art prints are easy to find.
