Marie Egner painted flowers in bowls and light falling through a pergola, subjects that hold their shape beautifully in counted cross stitch.
She was an Austrian painter, born in 1850 and died in 1940, and she studied under Hermann Königsbrunn before working with Emil Jakob Schindler. That second name mattered. Schindler was at the heart of Austrian landscape painting in the late nineteenth century, and Egner's own moorland scenes and garden views sit in that company. Her long life carried her from one century well into the next, though it is the floral still lifes and the outdoor pieces that people tend to remember her for now. In the Pergola, from 1910, is probably the work most often reproduced.
Other nineteenth-century painters: Henri Fantin-Latour.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Marie Egner art prints are easy to find.
