George S. Elgood spent his working life painting formal gardens, and gardens full of clipped hedges and deep flower borders are about as welcoming a subject as counted cross stitch could ask for.
Elgood was English, born in 1851 and died in 1943, and he worked mainly in watercolor. What he is remembered for is the garden itself rather than the people in it. Yew alleys, hedges grown tall enough to make rooms out of open air, orange lilies and larkspur standing in a summer border. His paintings appeared in Some English Gardens in 1904, and that book is where many people still meet his work first. A long career, and a remarkably consistent one for an artist who found a subject early and stayed with it.
Other nineteenth-century painters: Audley Dean Nichols, Julian Onderdonk, Ilya Zankovsky, and Boris Bessonov.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, George S. Elgood art prints are easy to find.
