Delphin Enjolras built a whole career on quiet moments, women reading or sewing by lamplight, and that steady focus on a single figure is what makes his work sit so comfortably in counted cross stitch.
Enjolras was a French academic painter, born in 1857 and died in 1945. He worked in watercolor, oil and pastel, and his subjects ranged across portraits, nudes and interiors, though it is the lamplit scenes of young women at some ordinary task that people remember. Young Woman Reading by a Window is probably the best known of them. Titles like A Favourite Book and The Murmur of the Sea give a fair sense of where his attention went.
Enjolras studied under Jean-Leon Gerome and Gaston Gerard.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Delphin Enjolras art prints are easy to find.
