John Faed is remembered above all for his portrait of George Washington, a picture that has outlived most of what else he did and one that suits counted cross stitch unusually well.
Faed was a Scottish painter, born in 1819 and died in 1902, and a member of the Royal Scottish Academy. The Washington portrait shows the general taking the salute at Trenton, and it is the work that still turns up on gallery walls and reproduction prints today, long after the rest of his output slipped out of general view. That is often how a nineteenth-century painter survives: one subject catches, gets copied, and carries the name forward on its own.
