Farquharson was a Scottish painter, born in 1846 and died in 1935. Edinburgh was his birthplace; Finzean in Aberdeenshire, where he spent much of his life, was where he died. He painted the Scottish countryside and put animals in it, most often sheep, and returned again and again to snowy ground at dawn or dusk. He did it so frequently, and to such effect, that people started calling him "'Frozen Mutton' Farquharson" and "The Painting Laird" — nicknames that stuck.
