This fine art counted cross-stitch pattern entitled Flowers of the Levant designed from a painting by Herbert Gustave Schmalz shows a dark-haired woman in ornate traditional dress carrying a decorative brass urn filled with deep purple irises across a marble-tiled courtyard. You can just imagine the rich fragrance of fresh iris blossoms wafting through the air.  The word "Levant" comes from the French word meaning rising, referring to the lands of the east where the sun rises. Historically, it describes the eastern Mediterranean region, encompassing modern-day Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, Palestine, and surrounding areas.  In 19th-century European art, particularly within Orientalist style painting, artists like Herbert Gustave Schmalz turned to the Levant for inspiration, fascinated by its romantic architecture, vivid light, and rich textile traditions. The title Flowers of the Levant actually carries a double meaning—it refers both to the literal bouquet of irises carried in the brass vessel and poetically to the young woman herself, celebrated as a beauty of the region.  Only full cross stitches are used in our patterns. No blended colors are used. Instead, we use a variety of solid colors to achieve a more realistic effect.
