Gainsborough, Thomas

Thomas Gainsborough was a portrait painter who would rather have been painting trees, and that pull between the two runs through the work that has made its way into counted cross stitch here.

He was English, born in 1727 and died in 1788, and the commissions came steadily: sitters like the young man in blue and the writer Richard Brinsley Sheridan kept him busy for most of his working life. The landscapes were the private pleasure, and he took more satisfaction from them than from any face he was paid to record. Cornard Wood and his coastal scenes with shepherds belong to that side of him, and he is credited with starting the British landscape school of the century. He worked fast, and his mature paintings show it in their light palette and loose strokes. He was a founding member of the Royal Academy, alongside his rival Sir Joshua Reynolds.

Joseph Mallord William Turner was another English painter working the same ground. Francois Boucher, Jean-Honore Fragonard, and Alexander Roslin were fellow Rococo painters.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Thomas Gainsborough art prints are easy to find.
