Garreta, Raimundo Madrazo y

Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta came from a family where painting was simply what the men did, and his portraits carry that confident, unfussy handling into counted cross stitch beautifully.

He was Spanish, born in 1841 and died in 1920, and he worked in the realist manner he had grown up around. His grandfather José de Madrazo, his father Federico, and his brother Ricardo were all painters, so Raimundo was the third generation of a household built on the craft. Portraits and genre scenes made his name, the sort of painting that catches people in a room rather than posing them on a pedestal. Later in his career the work took on touches of Rococo and Japanese influence, a shift away from where he started.

James Tissot, Konstantin Egorovich Makovsky, Ivan Nikolaevich Kramskoy, and John Constable were fellow realists.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Raimundo Madrazo y Garreta art prints are easy to find.
