By 1880 Jean-Leon Gerome was arguably the most famous living artist in the world, his paintings reproduced so widely that scenes like Pollice Verso and Truth Coming Out of Her Well became common property long before they became counted cross stitch.
He was a French painter and sculptor, born in 1824 and died in 1904, and he worked at the very center of academic art. History painting was his ground, along with religious subjects, Greek mythology and the Orientalist scenes that made his reputation abroad. Alongside Meissonier and Cabanel he was counted one of the three most successful artists of the Second Empire, which says something about how completely the taste of that period ran through his work.
Gerome studied under Paul Delaroche and Charles Gleyre, and he later taught Albert Aublet. He influenced Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, and he shared the Neo-Grec manner with Henri Pierre Picou.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Jean-Leon Gerome art prints are easy to find.
