Edward Lamson Henry built his reputation on ordinary life rather than grand subjects, and those everyday scenes are what give his work its pull in counted cross stitch.
He was an American painter, born in Charleston, South Carolina in 1841 and died in 1919, and he is usually known simply as E. L. Henry. Genre painting was his territory, which in plain terms means people going about their business instead of saints, gods or generals. That choice mattered more than it might sound. A painter who spends a career looking at how people actually sit, stand and gather leaves behind a record of a century that formal portraits never quite capture, and Henry spent his looking closely.
Other nineteenth-century painters: Jennie Augusta Brownscombe and Iosif Evstafevich Krachkovsky.
