Inness, George

George Inness painted the American countryside at the moment the railroad was arriving in it, and that mix of open fields and new machinery gives his work an unusual pull in counted cross stitch.

Inness was an American landscape painter, born in 1825 and died in 1894, and he belongs to the Hudson River school. His best known canvas is The Lackawanna Valley, where a train and a factory sit inside a wide rural valley without spoiling it. Elsewhere he stayed with quieter subjects: a wheat field, a river at sunset, the country around Medfield in Massachusetts. Landscape was the whole of his working life, and he returned to the same kind of ground again and again.

Martin Johnson Heade, Frederic Edwin Church, Robert S Duncanson, and William Sidney Mount were fellow Hudson River school landscape painters.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, George Inness art prints are easy to find.
