Leighton, Sir Frederick

Flaming June is one of those paintings almost everyone has seen without knowing who made it, and it is a large part of why Sir Frederick Leighton keeps turning up in counted cross stitch.

He was an English painter and sculptor, born in 1830 and died in 1896, and for most of his working life he was about as successful as a Victorian artist could be. His subjects came from history, the Bible, and classical mythology, painted in the academic manner that the Royal Academy world of his day prized. Prices for his work were enormous while he lived. Then the critics turned, and for much of the early twentieth century he was quietly set aside before audiences found him again.

Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones, John Everett Millais and Arnold Bocklin worked the same symbolic and mythological ground.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Sir Frederick Leighton art prints are easy to find.
