Lenoir, Charles Amable

Charles Amable Lenoir built a career on painting faces, and it is that steady attention to the human figure that makes his work such a natural fit for counted cross stitch.

He was French, born in 1860 and died in 1926, and he trained under William-Adolphe Bouguereau and Tony Robert-Fleury at a time when academic painting still set the standard. Like his mentor, Lenoir worked in realistic portraits alongside mythological and religious subjects. He won the Prix de Rome twice, which almost never happened to anyone, and was awarded the Légion d'honneur. Today he is remembered mostly for his portraits of women.

Bouguereau taught William Adolphe Bouguereau’s pupil Lenoir directly. Other French portrait painters in the shop include Leon Francois Comerre, Jules Lefebvre and Jean-Joseph Benjamin Constant.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Charles Amable Lenoir art prints are easy to find.
