Long, Edwin Longsden

Edwin Longsden Long built his reputation on enormous Orientalist canvases full of figures and story, and that crowded, unhurried kind of picture is a gift to anyone working in counted cross stitch.

He was a British painter, born in 1829 and died in 1891, and he worked across genre scenes, history subjects, biblical subjects and portraits. The Orientalist paintings are what made his name and his money. Many of them were very large, and they sold for high prices at a time when few living painters commanded them. The Babylonian Marriage Market is the one still attached to his name today. Alongside those set pieces he painted straightforward portraits, which is often how a successful Victorian painter kept the studio running between the big commissions.

Other nineteenth-century painters: Thomas Francis Dicksee, Georges Jules Victor Clairin, Jean-Joseph Benjamin Constant, and Sir Samuel Luke Fildes.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Edwin Longsden Long art prints are easy to find.
