Paul De Longpre painted flowers that look alive rather than arranged, which is why his roses and bouquets carry so well into counted cross stitch.
He was born in 1855 and died in 1911, a French painter who built his early career in Paris and New York before moving to Southern California in 1899. Flowers were his whole subject. He worked them in oil and in botanical watercolor, usually living blooms caught in dramatic light, sometimes with a bumblebee at the petals or a woven basket and a cut-glass vase set alongside. His audience crowned him Le Roi des Fleurs, the King of Flowers, and the title stuck. The Moorish house and three-acre garden he built in Hollywood turned into the town's first real tourist attraction, which says something about how famous a flower painter could be in 1900.
