Lizzie Mack drew Christmas the way Victorian children were taught to imagine it, snow and all, and that warmth is what carries her work so well into counted cross stitch.
Mack was a British illustrator whose name turns up on the handsome gift books that Victorian families bought for the season. Christmas Roses appeared in 1886 with its children bundled against the weather, and two years later she illustrated Old Father Christmas, including its cover. Beyond the books themselves she is not a name the art histories say much about, which is a pity, because the pictures have outlasted the record of the woman who made them.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Lizzie Mack art prints are easy to find.
