Makovsky, Konstantin Egorovich

Konstantin Egorovich Makovsky painted an old Russia that never quite existed, and that warm, imagined world is what draws stitchers to his work in counted cross stitch.

He was a Russian painter, born in 1839 and died in 1915, working through the Belle Epoque and associated with the Peredvizhniki, the Wanderers. Portraits were his steady ground, but he is best remembered for large historical scenes of Russian life in earlier centuries, among them Beneath the Crown of 1889, also known as The Russian Bride's Attire. Those pictures were never documentary. They were Russia as he wished to see it, and audiences loved them for exactly that reason. He is usually placed with the academic painters.

Makovsky was influenced by Karl Briullov. Ivan Nikolaevich Kramskoy, James Tissot, and Raimundo Madrazo y Garreta were fellow realists working in portraiture.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Konstantin Egorovich Makovsky art prints are easy to find.
