This fine art counted cross-stitch pattern entitled The Bone Player designed from a painting by William Sidney Mount shows a charismatic African American musician expertly playing "the bones," a traditional folk percussion instrument. In creating this piece, Mount wanted to emphasize the dignity, talent, and individual character of his subject, breaking away from the caricatures common in 19th-century art to provide a soulful and respectful portrayal of a performer. The visual palette is a warm, harmonious collection of golden ochres, deep burnt umbers, and rich chocolate browns, beautifully highlighted by the crisp white of the musician’s collar and the vibrant, peachy tones of his cravat. This pattern is for lovers of American genre painting and musical history like myself who appreciate powerful portraiture and the masterful way 19th-century artists captured the concentration and rhythmic energy of a live performance. The scene captures the heavy concentration of a quiet interior, where the focus is entirely on the movement of the hands and the soul of the music.  Only full cross stitches are used in our patterns. No blended colors are used. Instead, we use a variety of solid colors to achieve a more realistic effect.
