Mignot painted ice and jungle with the same seriousness, and that is a rare thing to find in one artist's body of work. For a stitcher, it means you can go from a frozen skating pond to dense tropical growth without leaving this page.
He was born in 1831, an American of French Catholic descent, and he died in 1870 at just thirty-nine. He's counted among the Hudson River School landscape painters, though his southern roots and the years he spent in Europe pushed him somewhere slightly apart from the rest of that group. Vegetation and atmosphere were his strengths, and both of those are exactly the sort of thing that makes a chart interesting to work.
The gentlest way in here is Hunters in a Winter Landscape at Level 3. It's still an advanced chart, but the snow gives you some breathing room between the detailed passages. The other three all sit at Level 4. Niagara is water and mist, which means a lot of close-value blending and very little you can stitch on autopilot. Tropical Landscape is the opposite problem and just as demanding, with layers of green stacked on green. Winter Skating Scene falls between them, small figures set against a broad frozen expanse. All four are counted cross stitch patterns worked on 18-count Aida and finished as framed wall art, and I'd suggest a good light and a magnifier before you start any of the Level 4 designs.
If landscape cross stitch is what you're after, these are worth the time they ask of you. None of them is a weekend project.
Who else to try: not connected to Mignot by art history, just artists whose patterns share shelf space with his in my collections — Regis Francois Gignoux, Antal Ligeti, Jacob Jan Coenraad Spohler and Walter Moras.
And if it's the paintings themselves you've fallen for rather than the stitching, reproductions of his work are easy enough to find. Have a look at Louis Remy Mignot art prints.
