Moran, Edward

Edward Moran spent his life painting water and the ships that crossed it, and that kind of subject — all sail, sky and open sea — holds its shape beautifully in counted cross stitch.

He was born in 1829 and died in 1901, an Englishman by birth who became an American painter and made marine art his whole working territory. James Hamilton taught him. What he is remembered for above everything else is a series of thirteen paintings tracing the maritime history of the United States, from arriving packet ships to the unveiling of the Statue of Liberty. It was an ambitious idea for one painter to take on, and he carried it through.

Other nineteenth-century painters: Carl Frederik Aagaard, Enrique Serra y Auque, and Hans Andreas Dahl.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Edward Moran art prints are easy to find.
