Mostyn, Thomas Edwin

Thomas Edwin Mostyn spent much of his working life painting gardens that look more dreamed than visited, and that quality carries over beautifully into counted cross stitch.

He was an English painter and etcher, born in 1864 and died in 1930, working through the late Victorian years and into the early part of the twentieth century. The garden scenes are what his name is attached to now, idealistic and romantic rather than botanical, with titles like An Enchanted Garden and The Terrace giving a fair sense of where his attention went. He painted portraits too, and pieces such as Vanity and Jewels show that side of him.

Other nineteenth-century painters: Jasper Francis Cropsey, Adolf Kaufmann, and Edward Wilkins Waite.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Thomas Edwin Mostyn art prints are easy to find.
