Audley Dean Nichols is not a name the art histories say much about, which makes his work all the more worth bringing back into view as counted cross stitch.
He was an American artist, born in 1886 and died in 1941. Beyond those bare dates the record thins out quickly, and what survives of him now sits mostly in the paintings themselves rather than in anything written down about the man. That is more common than people expect, and it takes nothing away from the pictures.
Other nineteenth-century painters: George S. Elgood, Julian Onderdonk, Ilya Zankovsky, and Boris Bessonov.
