Normann, Adelsteen

Adelsteen Normann painted the fjords of Norway so convincingly that people started booking passage to see them, and that same sense of deep water and rising rock is what carries his work into counted cross stitch.

He was Norwegian, born in 1848 and died in 1918, and he built his career in Berlin while painting the coast and fjords of home. He trained under Andreas Müller, Albert Flamm and Eugen Dücker. The landscape painting he is remembered for is credited with turning the Norwegian fjords into a destination for travelers, which is an unusual thing for any painter to be able to claim. There is one more footnote worth keeping: it was Normann who invited Edvard Munch to Berlin, the city where Munch painted The Scream.

Other nineteenth-century painters: Carl Frederik Aagaard, Alexandre Calame, Enrique Serra y Auque, and Nikanor Chernetsov.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Adelsteen Normann art prints are easy to find.
