Onderdonk, Julian

Julian Onderdonk is the painter Texas claims as its own, and his work carries into counted cross stitch the same wide, unhurried feeling for the country he grew up in.

He was an American painter, born in 1882 and died in 1922, and he is remembered by the title that has followed him ever since: the father of Texas painting. Onderdonk worked in an Impressionist manner and took the Texas landscape as his subject, which was not an obvious thing to do at the time. Verner Moore White was among those whose work left a mark on him. Forty years is a short life for a painter, and it is worth remembering how much of what people now picture when they think of Texas scenery came from a man who died before he reached his forties.

Other nineteenth-century painters: George S. Elgood, Audley Dean Nichols, Ilya Zankovsky, and Boris Bessonov.
