Panini, Giovanni Paolo

Giovanni Paolo Panini painted Rome as a place of columns, arches and crumbling stone, and that architecture gives counted cross stitch something firm to build on.

He was an Italian painter and architect, born in 1691 and died in 1765, and he spent his working life in Rome as one of the vedutisti. The city's antiquities interested him more than almost anything else. He is remembered for his view of the interior of the Pantheon and for his picture galleries, canvases crowded with framed views of Rome hung one above another. Much of what he painted, especially the ruins, carries the fanciful embellishment of capriccio rather than a straight record of what stood there. He trained under Giuseppe Natali, Andrea Galluzzi, Francesco Galli Bibiena and Benedetto Luti, and he also painted portraits, among them one of Pope Benedict XIV.

Panini influenced Giovanni Antonio Canaletto, who worked in the same genre. Jan Boeckhorst, Ferdinand Bol and Abraham Janssens were fellow Baroque painters.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Giovanni Paolo Panini art prints are easy to find.
