Charles Edward Perugini had a gift for the unhurried moment, the woman with a book and an afternoon to spend on it, and that stillness is what carries his work so well into counted cross stitch.
Born in 1839 and dead by way of a long English life in 1918, he arrived as Carlo Perugini and became, in time, a thoroughly English painter of the Victorian era. Genre scenes and portraits made up most of his output. He is remembered less for grand subjects than for domestic ones, girls dressing up, figures on a rampart, someone reading in the sun, painted with enough care that the sitters feel like people rather than props.
Other nineteenth-century painters: Thomas Brooks, Charles Baugniet, John William Godward, and Francois Martin-Kavel.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Charles Edward Perugini art prints are easy to find.
