Harold Piffard painted history and Orientalist subjects with the clarity of a man who also had to make pictures legible on a printed page, and that same clarity is what carries his work into counted cross stitch.
He was English, born in 1867 and died in 1939, and he trained at the Royal Academy Schools in London, where his first painting was exhibited in 1895. Oils and watercolor both suited him, and he ranged widely in subject, history painting among his favorites. The steadier living came from illustration: novels, and periodicals including The Strand Magazine and The Illustrated London News. Then came the odd turn that makes him hard to forget. From 1907 aviation took hold of him, and by 1909 he was flying an aircraft he had built himself, first near his Chiswick home in West London, later at Shoreham-by-Sea beside his old school at Lancing.
Other nineteenth-century painters: Ludwig Knaus, Charles Joshua Chaplin, Edwin Thomas Roberts, and Thomas Brooks.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Harold Piffard art prints are easy to find.
