This fine art counted cross-stitch pattern entitled Portrait of Alwina Agnes Clementina Bohlen was designed from a painting by Thomas Sully and shows a stylish young woman wearing an elaborate wide-brimmed sun bonnet and a golden gown, holding a monocle ribbon against an open sky. Although not a noblewoman, Alwina Agnes Clementine Bohlen was born in Philadelphia in 1809 to Bohl Bohlen, a prominent merchant of German heritage. Captured here in her youth by the renowned American portraitist Thomas Sully, she belonged to a distinguished family whose lineage connected American commerce with European aristocracy. She later married in 1827 and lived a life of quiet elegance, leaving behind this vibrant portrait as a celebrated example of 19th-century portraiture.  Our patterns use only full cross stitches. No blended colors are used. Instead, we use a variety of solid colors to achieve a more realistic effect.
