Valentine Cameron Prinsep belonged to the Pre-Raphaelite circle, and the careful, deliberate look of that school is what makes his paintings such natural subjects for counted cross stitch.
A British painter, he was born in 1838 and died in 1904. His work sits with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, the group that turned away from the polished conventions of the day in search of something older and more exact. Prinsep painted people above all — young women reading, waiting, holding flowers brought in from the country — and he liked the seasons as a subject, with autumn and the first touch of winter turning up again and again in his titles. He is less famous today than some of the names he worked alongside, which is a pity, because the pictures hold up.
Other nineteenth-century painters: Thomas Brooks, Harold Piffard, Henrietta Rae, and Charles Edward Perugini.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Valentine Cameron Prinsep art prints are easy to find.
