William Trost Richards spent his life looking hard at ordinary American land and sea, and that patient attention is what carries his work into counted cross stitch so well.
He was an American painter, born in 1833 and died in 1905, and landscape was his subject from beginning to end. Richards belongs to the Hudson River school, the group that made wide American scenery worth painting in the first place, but he also kept company with the American Pre-Raphaelites and their insistence on close, honest observation. Indian Summer remains the picture most people know him by, still reproduced and hung more than a century on.
Martin Johnson Heade, Frederic Edwin Church, Robert S Duncanson, and George Inness were fellow Hudson River school landscape painters.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, William Trost Richards art prints are easy to find.
