Robert, Hubert

Hubert Robert painted ruins that never quite existed, stitching real Roman columns into invented views, and that sense of a place half remembered and half dreamed carries beautifully into counted cross stitch.

He was a French painter, born in 1733 and died in 1808, and he studied under René-Michel Slodtz. Landscape painting was his territory, though the word undersells what he actually did. Robert built capricci: picturesque scenes that gather up broken temples, colonnades and monuments from Italy and France and arrange them as no real street ever arranged them. Rome gave him his subject and his reputation, and he kept returning to it long after leaving. The work sits at the edge of Romanticism, where a crumbling arch is worth painting precisely because it is crumbling.

Other eighteenth-century painters: il Canaletto, Bernardo Bellotto.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Hubert Robert art prints are easy to find.
