Rosati, Giulio

Giulio Rosati built whole rooms full of movement out of dancers, musicians and onlookers, and that density of incident is what makes his paintings such rewarding subjects for counted cross stitch.

Rosati was an Italian painter, born in 1858 and died in 1917, who worked in the Orientalist manner that drew so many European artists of his generation toward imagined scenes of the East. Pictures such as The Harem Dance and The Dance are the works his name still travels with. He trained in the academic tradition and took influence from the Spanish painter Luis Álvarez Catalá, whose polished figure work left its mark on him. Rosati himself is not a name the art histories say a great deal about, though his paintings have kept a steady audience long past his lifetime.

Other nineteenth-century painters: Sir Frank Dicksee and Arthur Hughes.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Giulio Rosati art prints are easy to find.
