Schmalz, Herbert Gustave

Herbert Gustave Schmalz painted grand historical and religious scenes that carry real weight at full size, which is why they hold up so well as counted cross stitch.

He was an English painter, born in 1856 and died in 1935, and he worked in the Pre-Raphaelite tradition at a time when the newer French painting was pulling art in the opposite direction. Schmalz wanted nothing to do with it. Described as utterly hostile to impressionism, he stayed with careful figures and serious subjects, and he is remembered above all for his Christian art. Zenobia's Last Look on Palmyra, finished in 1888, remains the picture most people know him by, with Faithful Unto Death (Christianes Ad Leones!) close behind. From 1918 he went by the name Herbert Carmichael.

Other nineteenth-century painters: Thomas Francis Dicksee, Sir Samuel Luke Fildes, Cesare Auguste Detti, and Marie Spartali Stillman.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Herbert Gustave Schmalz art prints are easy to find.
