Schmutzler, Leopold

Leopold Schmutzler built his reputation on portraits of women, and that steady attention to a single face is what carries his work so well into counted cross stitch.

He was a Bohemian-born German painter, born in 1864 and died in 1940. Portraits were his living, but he is just as often remembered for semi-erotic female figures and for genre scenes done in a Rococo manner, a taste that was already old-fashioned by the time he took it up. Two of his best-known canvases give a fair sense of the range: Lili Marberg as Salome, painted around 1905, and The Flamenco Dancer. His later years are harder to sit with. Schmutzler gave his support to the Nazi Party, and that stands alongside the paintings rather than behind them.

Other nineteenth-century painters: Conrad Kiesel, Edward Mason Eggleston, William McGregor Paxton, and Gyula Benczur.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Leopold Schmutzler art prints are easy to find.
